artistic and academic roots

My career of thinking critically about society has spanned both an artistic, an applied, and an academic approach. I started as an artist, worked as a photojournalist and wilderness guide, but have also conducted and published rigorous social science research. I am currently a professor of sociology at Lake Forest College. For over two decades, I have dedicated my career to the intersection of environmental sociology and climate justice. While taking different forms, my work focuses on understanding the social dimensions of environmental change with an emphasis on equity.

academic research
